Greek Mercenary Hoplites

Needing more Greek hoplites that could slot into any army I have just painted up a unit of mercenaries.

The white shields and some white painted helmets give them a coherent look and yet they are still quit individual as I imagine mercenaries would be. The figures are Newline Designs 20mm and the shield are a mix of hand painted and over-painted transfers from Little Big Men Studios. I ragged the shields to give them a slightly distressed look (see ragging hoplite shieds).

Most of the men are unarmoured as was common in the Peleponnesian Wars. Red was a popular colour and I gave these men tunics in varying shades of red from crimson to pink. I also decided to give some white painted helmets. We know that the Thebans painted their helmets white at 2nd Mantinea and Macedonian paintings aslo show painted helmets. How common this was I do not know but I felt that some white painted helmets looked good with the white shields.

The Argives were noted for white shields so these men could also be happily fielded as Argives.
