How does the game play?

I have played this scenario several times and both Pompey and Caesar have won. There is no doubt Caesar has the most challenging task.
Usually the game hinges on the cavalry but one occasion, thanks to some very lucky dice rolls, Pompey's Legions decisively defeated Caesar's before the cavalry action had been decided.
